Santa Cruz Island Reserve

Two-day exploration of Santa Cruz Island biota, by an undergraduate Biology Field Trip course. We hope to visit a variety of island communities, in which students will observe birds and other wildlife using binoculars and other optical equipment; identify dominant plant species; measure relative abundance of plant species non-destructively; measure physical factors (soil characteristics in surface 10 cm (pH, color, and texture), temperatures, humidity, light; if allowed, collect specimens of common plant species for the college herbarium for educational use. Any additional projects designed by students before the trip in Jan/Feb will be described to Lyndal Laughrin for approval before the trip. Our visit is part of a 9-day biology field trip to a number of southern California locations. Housing needs: dormitory, with access to kitchen facilities; we will bring food and any utensils and sleeping bags needed. If available, van transportation to field sites on the island would be useful.
