This project is related to my work on faulting of the Islands, with field work done mainly from 1988 through about 2000. The later part of this work was done under a project lead by Nicholas Pinter, with me as a co-P.I.. Since then, I have continued to work on NSF-funded projects on the stratigraphy and structure beneath Santa Barbara Channel, and the other (listed on this form), on stratigraphy and structure south and east of Santa Cruz Island. The lead P.I. on these projects is Craig Nicholson of Marine Science Institute, with James Kennett as a co-PI on the Santa Barbara Channel project. In addition, I have spent parts of the last few years working on SCEC and USGS-NEHRP funded mapping of the same fault systems that affect Santa Cruz Island, in the area south of the Santa Monica Mountains. A manuscript on this work is accepted by the Journal of Geophysical Research. I am a co-author on 2 others papers about Santa Cruz island in major journals, and am author of other papers in guide-books, the Channel Islands symposium, and Pacific Section AAPG publications. The proposed work on Santa Cruz Island, to start September 2006, is to show a Cal State University Master?s student, Sarah Schindler, the various strands of the Santa Cruz Island fault, the rocks, and the folding. She is working on our NSF-funded project. We have already interpreted the eastern offshore Santa Cruz Island fault in 3D as it continues as the Malibu Coast fault, have mapped the Santa Cruz-Catalina Ridge fault as it projects towards Santa Cruz Island, and have interpreted the stratigraphy of Santa Monica basin. We will be mapping the Channel Islands thrust in 3D south of Santa Cruz Island; it dips north beneath the Island and is responsible for the folding and uplift of the island. We are interested in the fold structure and how small fault-bounded blocks on southern Santa Cruz Island absorb right-lateral slip on the Santa Cruz-Catalina Ridge fault and other right-lateral faults. I also plan on doing some later self-funded field work with other geologists to examine similar problems.
