The extent of the influence of exotic plants on native plant and arthropod communities is not completely understood. To further understand these influences, and the potential benefits of restoration, two investigations are proposed. First, little is know of the athropod communities found in eucalyptus woodlands on Santa Cruz Islands. These woodlands often replace oak woodlands for which we recently developed a reference collection of arthropods. The proposed research would involve pitfall trapping arthropods in eucalyptus woodlands for comparison with previously collected samples. Second, fennel may be released by the removal of feral pigs. This species may have some allelopathic characteristics and consequently it expansion would harm native plants. As a preliminary investigation into this relationship, we will survey the understory of a series of dense fennel stands to describe the degree to which native shrubs co-exist or germinate under fennel.
