Santa Cruz Island Reserve

The main objective of the archaeological reconnaissance is to discover sites that may have evidence of occupation prior to 8000 years ago. Deeply buried archaeological deposits already are known to be exposed along the seacliff above Christy Beach, one of which is radiocarbon dated to 8100 BP. Other sites having early occupation are expected to be rock shelters located along ravines bisecting the marine terrace between Black Point and Forneys Cove. For each site located, a site record form will be filled out and shell samples will be collected for radiocarbon dating. A subsidiary goal is to collect shells for radiocarbon dating from a previously recorded site along the southwest coast of the island, west of Near Point.
