By exposing students to phenomena occurring under multiple contexts, students can formulate more accurate conceptions about how the world works. In an attempt to expose students to more phenomena, I am producing short videos that show how major science concepts are interconnected across multiple domains. Part of the curricular design involves helping students and teachers visualize the Cross-cutting Concepts within NGSS. My goal is to capture the following concepts in multiple domains such that students gain a bigger picture about the core disciplinary ideas in science. 1. Patterns, similarity, and diversity 2. Cause and effect;; scale, proportion and quantity 3. Systems and system models 4. Energy and matter 5. Structure vs. function 6. Stability and change For example, a video may include the patterns of migratory birds, patterns in how the Earth orbits around the sun, patterns within math (like fractals), patterns in music rhythm, patterns in human behavior, etc. These cross-cutting concepts were designed to aid students in thinking scientifically across Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology, but I want students to also see how these concepts exist outside of the sciences as well. I have communicated with four natural reserves, all spread throughout California, so that I can capture different natural events and phenomena occurring at different latitudes. Documenting the science at the natural reserve will just be one part of the project, but the bigger picture of this project is to expand student perspectives on how concepts can be used across the board. By gaining a larger picture about how they perceive the world to function as well as having a strong foundation in fundamental concepts, this may be a way to better address science misconceptions.
