UCI - San Joaquin Marsh Reserve

Our purpose is to: 1) show, and inform our students about, the unique plant habitats and bird habitats at UCI March Reserve; 2)educate our students about the importance of wetlands here in southern CA 3)harvest tule reed (california bulrush) for use in building a tule canoe similar to the tule canoes that the native Tongva and Acjachemen have used here in California wetlands for thousands of years. (The tule canoe will be built at a later date at a different site, not at the UCI March Reserve.) We will have one pickup truck to load with tule. We would like to enter the reserve at the south gate along Campus drive, or other place that can be easily accessed with minimal encroachment on the marsh and wetlands. We would like to harvest tule from an area than can be accessed relatively easily on foot without heavily encroaching on plant and animal life. We plan to harvest from 10am to 1pm on March 2, 2012. Our ten students, ages 10-14 years old, and two instructors, myself and my wife Amy, understand that we will be entering a protected area.
