This trip is a combined Geology Club and Biology Club field trip. I do not know how many students will attend at this time, but I anticipate it will be between 10 and 25 persons. I am the primary leader. I am a retired geology teacher at Santa Barbara City College. My co-leader will probably be Adam Green, SBCC Biology Dept. Chair. He will already be there with his field methods class from 8am-1pm. We'll meet up with him there and he will help us with the biology and the ecology. The trip will cover: The geology of the slough and the region The human history of the slough and the region Slough wildlife and ecology And the slough restoration plans. Here's a break down of how I plan to run the trip: 1. I plan to start at SBCC at 9:00 or 10:00 am. (TBD) 2. First, I will explain SB geology using the maps and images in the EBS-123 classroom at SBCC. 3. Then, I will go to the lookout at the SE edge of E Campus parking lot and show and explain the SB geologic landscape visible from there. 4. Then, we'll hop in the bus and drive west to Devereaux, stopping at a couple of places to point out the Mesa, Mission Ridge, and More Ranch Faults, which are the reasons for the Goleta area sloughs. 5. I will stop at the Goleta Slough and discuss the geologic and human history there. 6. Then, we'll go to The old Ocean Meadows Golf Course, 6925 Whittier Dr. We will park in the old lot, view the remediation site, discuss the plans for remediation with maps and historic photos, and then walk south to Devereaux driveway, to the sea cliffs there. 7. At the cliffs, we'll view the old Campbell Estate artifacts and discuss that estate, then head down to Sands Beach, across the slough and return along the pond walk to the Venoco Access Rd. And then back to the cars. 8. I envision that the trip will probably go from 9 or 10 am to 3 or 4 pm, but it all depends on the level and quantity of participation and questions. I haven't offered this exact field trip before so I don't have the times completely worked out. 9. As you can see, we're sticking to the public access trails, so maybe I don't need a permit?
