Unseen California Unseen California is an Artist-in-Residence (AIR) field study program designed to host professional artists in the creation of new artworks that visualize California land use, access, and equity in the 21st Century. The first cohort of artists are all photographers and educators based in California that will utilize the UC Natural Reserve System’s outdoor California classroom laboratories. Each artist will prioritize on-site exploration and engagement with the unique ecology and scientific research at their chosen Reserve(s). Unseen California is also a visual platform that will feature Artist Documentaries from each AIR cohort. This online visual platform will present the AIR research and serve as an accessible archive and vehicle for a wide public audience to engage with the research, process, and resulting artworks. Project timeline: August 2021 - August 2022 ______________ 1 Unseen California aims to “see” (by means of visualization and acknowledgement) the multivalent histories that compose the California landscape. This includes indigenous stewardship and regenerative practices – on ceded and unceded land – and the role of settler colonialism and imperialism in construction of these histories. Unseen California invites artists to engage in new types of creative ecology not yet considered/addressed in full within institutional spaces and the photographic canon.
