Marine flora diversity of Tetiaroa atoll The campaign in Tetiaro will be carried out in continuation of the exploratory field trip in February 2017 with the primary objective to document the marine flora of this atoll, and in addition to study seaweeds population genetics, and seaweeds-corals interactions within the Tetiaroan lagoon. Focusing on certain taxa, especially of brown seaweeds, this campaign will complete the collection from 2017. A primary identification of Tetiaroan seaweeds species will be made based on morphological traits. Species identification will later be confirmed using molecular approaches (e.g. barcoding). Assessment of the marine flora will be done on the outer reef and within the lagoon of the atoll. The population genetics study will focus on one species of brown algae, Lobophora obscura, which is distributed across the Indo-Pacific. This collection will complete samplings already performed along the geographic range of this species (e.g. Mozambique, Madagascar, Vietnam, New Caledonia, etc.). During the 2017 exploratory campaign, the genus Lobophora was also found forming large beds within the lagoon and in frequent contact with corals. During this campaign, we aim to further document Lobophora-coral interactions and more generally, seaweeds-corals interactions, by identifying the coral and seaweed species in direct contact. A series of ecological experiments will also be deployed (in situ and in the laboratory) to assess the effects of Lobophora on corals, and the mechanisms of competition at play.
