While visiting the reserve, we hope to address the following two objectives. [1] Map and quantify nutrient flows across coupled island-reef systems and highlight nutrient hotspots. Using high-resolution remote sensing techniques, we will classify and map nutrient signatures to track the magnitude and spatial distribution of nutrients flowing between land and sea, across islands with varying seabird densities. Using deep learning, we will link in situ water quality data with remotely sensed spectral data. We will conduct hyperspectral measurements of the benthos and water column in situ using small portable radiometers. Water quality measurements will be taken across Moorea and Tetiaroa using digital probes and no equipment will be left on the reef or in the field stations. All the methods used for this work are non-intrusive and no samples will be collected. [2] Evaluate the relative roles of habitat complexity and heterogeneity, depth, vegetation type, and geomorphology in mediating nutrient flows. We expect to see context-dependent effects of land-sea nutrient connectivity on seascape primary productivity driven primarily by the identity of the nutrients being transported. We will collect Turbinaria and/or Halimeda macroalgae at sites distributed across Moorea and Tetiaroa for analyses of total phosphorus (%P), nitrogen (%N), N:P ratios, and stable isotope ratios (15N:14N). We will also conduct visual and video transect surveys of coral reef benthic and fish assemblages.
