I plan on expanding on the preliminary data that I obtained from summer 2018 and last November 2019 . More specifically my preliminary data showed that the macroalga Turbinaria ornata harbors the highest abundance of toxin producing dinoflagellates on one site of the island of Mo’orea. However, it is unclear if these results are unique to the time or environmental characteristics of the sites of the preliminary study. In addition, last November 2019 conditions weren't ideal for the collection algae as some sites didn't have specific species of macroalga required to compare toxic dinoflagellate abundances. As such, I will select 6 different sites around the island of Mo’orea to collect and process replicated samples of macroalgae. I will select sample sites to include 3 areas with high anthropogenic impacts (e.g. Cooks Bay) and 3 sites with limited anthropogenic impact. This design will allow me to compare if patterns replicate on different regions and I will be able to compare if there are different patterns for high/low human impacted reefs.
