Collection of blood samples and morphological data from silvereyes and other introduced terrestrial bird species from multiple islands as part of a genomics project examining how divergence occurs at the level of the genome at both broad and fine temporal and geographic scales to address two important evolutionary questions: (1) Just how rapidly can evolutionary change occur? and (2) How important is gene flow in divergence? We plan to sample silvereyes (Zosterops lateralis) on islands colonised by the species across the Austral, Society and Tuamotu Archipelagos (up to 11 islands in total, depending on funding) in March-May 2017. The islands are: Tahiti, Moorea, Maupiti, Huahine, Tahaa, Raiatea, and Bora Bora (Society archipelago); Rurutu, Tubuai and Raivavae (Austral archipelago) and Makatea (Tuamotu archipelago). In addition to Z. lateralis we plan to opportunistically take samples from other introduced species that we catch. These include: red-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer), common myna (Acridotheres tristis), rock dove (Columba livia), common waxbill (Estrilda astrild), zebra dove (Geopelia striata), chestnut-breasted mannikin (Lonchura castaneothorax), red-browned firetail (Neochmia temporalis), black-headed weaver (Ploceus melanocephalus), and crimson-backed Tanager (Ramphocelus dimidiatus).
