Elliott Chaparral Reserve

We are tracking the response of yuccas and their floral insect associates after the Cedar Fire. This will be the third flowering season since the fire. Our goal this year will be to mark, map, and measure all flowering yuccas within our study site (near the eastern boundary of the Elliot Chaparral Reserve). We will be recording variables such as: Inflorescence size, flowering phenology, plant reproductive success, pollinator abundance, and pollinator reproductive success. If we wish to understand how species of focal interest survive and recover from disturbance, then it is clear that they must be studied in the context of biotic associates without which they cannot survive or reproduce. There is remarkably little work in this area to date, however. This study provides some of the first data on sensitivity, resilience, and reestablishment of mutualisms after a major disturbance. More broadly, it will be a novel contribution towards understanding how North American ecosystems respond to and recover from fire.
