Elliott Chaparral Reserve

This purpose of this study is to conduct preliminary research to determine the potential of this site toward later studies on the succession of ant communities following a disturbance, namely fire. Following the San Diego fires that occurred in October of 2003, southern California is a primary location for my research objectives. I have some pre burn data from the Elliot Reserve as I conducted my undergraduate thesis at the site. I hope to use some of this data as well as collect new data to assess the possibility of having Elliot as a perminant site to conduct research for my doctoral dissertation. The study will take place in areas of the reserve that have recently been burned both along roads and within the reserve. Methods include setting pitfall traps to collect invertebrates, specifically ants and locating and marking ant colonies. Other measurements will include soil temperature and moisture data and determining foraging area for the colonies. Colonies will be marked so as to be able to return to the site and continue to monitor changes occuring as the site undergoes succession after the fire. Vegetation will be identified and mapped, and growth and productivity measurements will also be assessed.
