During this activity we will be opening our 10 pitfall arrays. The traps will be open for 5 days and checked on a daily basis. On the fifth day traps will be closed so no other animals can be captured. Some animals will be temporarily disturbed if they should fall into a trap. All captured animals will be weighed, measured, sexed, and released upon discovery. Some lizards and snakes will have tissue taken from them (tails tip, scale or toe clips)for genetic studies as well as recapture identification. Mammals will have a small amount of hair clipped to determine if animal is a recap or not. No species will be introduced to the site. During this sample we will also set up 18 Sherman traps at each array. These traps will catch small mammals. Any mammal captured will be weighed, measured, sexed and hair clipped. There will be five 50m tubes filled with 20ml of non-toxic environmentally safe antifreeze set at each pitfall array. These traps are also covered with a 5?x5? mesh wire cloth to prevent unwanted animals from falling in. Traps will be closed and collected on the fifth day (Friday). Only very small invertebrates (ant size) will be harmed. I have sent a map of our arrays to Isabelle Kay.
